Stereoscope Coastal Kitchen
A seasonal cookbook and menu system designed for a new restaurant on the California coastline.
The stereoscope is a device for viewing two photographs, at slightly different angles, to create the illusion of depth in an image. The conceptual design was based on this nostalgic 3D technique by recreating the process in print. It plays with the idea of immersion versus illusion as a visceral pleasure. Stereoscope Coastal Kitchen is a blend of virtual arts within a unique dining experience.
Coastal imagery and creatures with monotone landscapes make up the stylistic details of this cookbook. The palette is limited to only the tones used in the anaglyph process. The iconic colors and eccentric images evoke a nostalgic feeling with a modern twist.
Most of the photos in the book, as well as the logo, are 3D viewable and any pair of anaglyph 3D glasses will reveal the parallax effect of the images. The logo was customized to create visual layers that react to red and blue anaglyph lenses and support the conceptual design as a stand alone logotype. The outcome is a piece that can be enjoyed with or without the use of 3D glasses and is fun to share with others.
